For over thirty years, the Iziko Planetarium in Cape Town has been a mainstay of astronomy education, through programmed shows and live lectures, to millions of school learners, visitors, and tourists.
The outdated analogue technology is currently being upgraded to a full-dome 8K digital facility which will produce high-resolution, multi-media image projection. Aside from providing edutainment across all fields and interests, it will be a powerful multi-dimensional visualization tool, which will greatly assist big data researchers.
The Iziko Planetarium Digital Upgrade Project is jointly funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Arts and Culture, the National Research Foundation, the National Lotteries Commission, the University of Cape Town, the University of Western Cape and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, with investment in excess of R25 million. The Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome will launch on 26 May 2017.
