Director: E-Research


The University of the Western Cape is a research intensive institution with a longstanding reputation in the humanities and natural sciences, and more recently is a founding member of the Inter-university Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy (IDIA) which is developing the capacity in South Africa to exploit data from the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Project. This diverse knowledge production requires the use of technology-enabled research practices (also referred to as e-Research) for scalable data management solutions, and to accelerate discovery. 

The University of the Western Cape is a partner in the African Research Cloud project and part of a consortium of Universities that is establishing a Western Cape Data Intensive Research Facility (ILIFU) with support/ funding from the Department of Science & Technology. We are seeking to make an appointment at the Professor level in the area of Astroinformatics or Bioinformatics. In addition to leading their own research programmes, the appointee will facilitate the UWC engagement in the African Research Cloud and serve as the Facility Director for ILIFU. 

The appointee will also provide leadership to develop an e-Research strategy at UWC in partnership with data intensive research teams across campus and with the Information Technology Services, aimed at guiding the implementation of IT infrastructure solutions and services that will transform and accelerate research.

The position will be responsible for:

  • Leading data-intensive research programs in Astroinformatics or Bioinformatics
  • Facilitating UWC engagement in the South African Data Intensive Research Cloud project
  • Serving as the Facility Director of the Western Cape Data Intensive Research Facility 
  • Providing leadership as part of a UWC campus-wide e-Research initiative

Minimum requirements include:

  • A Doctoral degree in astronomy, biosciences, computer science, statistics or related data intensive research or analytics field 
  • Relevant experience in Astroinformatics or bioinformatics 
  • Experience in management of projects related to data intensive research 
  • Experience in building technical solutions for a data intensive or multi-disciplinary research environments
